How To Tell If Your Ear Piercing Is Infected

Sometimes piercings can get infected just a couple of days after getting pierced. Often it can even occur later down the line. This is why keeping up with proper cleaning and care is so important. Knowing that you can be at risk of infection anytime after leaving your piercing appointment should be more than enough of a reason to stay on top of your aftercare routine!

Healing

After receiving your piercing it is just as important that the inside of your piercing heals as the outside. Even if you clean your new piercing very well you can still be susceptible to an infection. Something as little as not retaining proper nutrition can cause an infection to attack a new piercing. It is always recommended to clean your new piercing regularly, eat a balanced diet, and listen to your body!

Signs Your Piercing is Infected:

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should consult your doctor:

  • Creamy or Green Discharge

  • The Area is Red & Highly Inflamed

  • The Area is Throbbing & Sensitive

  • Swollen Glands

How To Treat An Infected Piercing

When treating an infected piercing you should be very careful. Here is an at-home remedy that may help you deal with a possible infected piercing.

  1. The first thing that you want to do is get a clean bowl and add in 5 tablespoons of salt followed by 2 cups of boiling water.

  2. Once the water reaches a lukewarm temperature place a clean facecloth inside the bowl to capture the saline preparation.

  3. Next ring out the facecloth to the point that water is not dripping out. Gently press the cloth above and below the piercing.

  4. A healed piercing means that the skin has completely sealed itself while creating a new tunnel of skin around the jewelry.

  5. The saline solutions will help remove unwanted bacteria.

  6. It is best to hold the soaked cloth around the affected area for a minute, then repeat the process.
